This text is meant to accompany class discussions. It is not everything there is to know about static equilibrium. It is meant as a  prep for class.

 

Solution Hints

When solving word problems, here are a few hints:

  1. Draw an extended free body diagram.
  2. Sum up the forces horizontally and vertically.
  3. Sum up the torques.
  4. Choose a pivot point where you and unknown amount of force is located.
  5. You are not limited to only 1 torque summation. You can make as many of these summations around as many locations as you want.

 

The practice problems below only have value if you try the problem before looking through the solutions.
